Devolution brooks5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() But it does make for a more dramatic story to think they are out there still hunting the rest of the tribe. But I’m more inclined to believe that they hiked out, and ended up dying from exposure to the elements. What happened to Kate and Pal? Which of the endings do you think happened? I would like to believe that they hiked out, and eventually found help. What was your take on what happened to Tony and Yvette? Were they just weak, fake people? As soon as it was apparent that they had lost control, they hid themselves away, as their facades crumbled, not even seeking help when they literally started wasting away? What did Tony discover when he ventured down the road? What was in the hiking pack? Did he take it with him, intending to hike out to get help, or did he stumble upon a deceased hiker, and took the pack from the body? I was hoping to have a discussion with anyone else who has finished it. I just finished it, and I really enjoyed it. After seeing Max Brooks’ AMA on Devolution, I picked it up the first chance I could. ![]()

He then divides societies into “elites” and “the people”, claiming that the former understand “civilization”, while the latter bring “culture” to the table. Turkey, on the other hand, will be positioned for success if it situates itself entirely within Western civilization. Defining a nation as “composed of individuals who share a common language, religion, morality and aesthetics, that is to say, who have received the same education”, Gökalp proceeds to outline a program of Turkism intended to bring Turkey into modernity and make it a significant player on the global scene.Īfter wading through some definitional issues, Gökalp engages in a discussion about the failures of Ottomanism, which culminates in the argument that a “nation is either Eastern or Western” and that the empire’s Tanzimat reforms could never have achieved success because they refused to let go of Eastern civilization. ![]() Published one year before his death, today it stands as a framing document for Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s development of modern Turkey and as a rallying call and philosophical foundation for Turkish nationalism. ![]() ![]() Ziya Gökalp’s The Principles of Turkism is, in essence, a collection of the teachings and philosophies that the author had espoused over the course of his life. ![]() Private novelist by nell zink5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The Reverend Vaillaincourt felt important all the time, because he was descended from a family that had sheltered John Wilkes Booth” (2-3). It was indirectly her fault that Peggy thought of “man” as a job title” (4). Zink accomplishes a lot of spot-on characterization in the novel’s opening pages an example I especially enjoy is the moment at a barbeque when Peggy “recognize the woman everybody said was the maintenance man at the elementary school. Peggy Vaillaincourt’s parents know she is odd (her gym suit never quite fits right, she wants to join the army, and so forth), and her mother’s response to these quirks is to declare her daughter “a thespian” (4), apparently without irony. The premise of this novel is a fascinating one: what would happen if a lesbian and a gay man got married? Zink raises the stakes by posing this question in the context of an all-women’s college in Virginia in the 1960’s. ![]() Words on the bathroom walls book5/11/2023 ![]() Lewis George Orwell Mary Pope Osborne LeUyen Pham Dav Pilkey Roger Priddy Rick Riordan J.
